Background: A motion was passed by the Conference at our Annual General Meeting, that we will develop better communication strategies within the Conference. The Ministry, Personnel, Education, Settlement, Internship (MPESI) committee plans to meet this need by posting a one-page synopsis of our meetings on the Conference website, and distribute these notes throughout our network.
MPESI co-chairs: Jane Capstick (Ministry, Personnel, Education(Kathleen McCallum (Settlement) Mary-Jo Eckert-Tracy (Internship)
Racial Justice Training: Two workshops will be offered in the spring. Racial justice training is mandatory for ministry personnel. Each Presbytery needs to determine what "mandatory" means.
Former Staff Associates: Are now considered Designated Lay Ministers (not recognized).
DLM's are those who are appointed to Presbytery Accountable Ministries.
DLM's are no longer required to have the Licensed Lay Worship Leaders Course. An alternative course in Youth and Young Adult Ministry is now recognized as acceptable training.
Retired DLM's are now a separate category (not ministry personnel, not members at large). They may make a request to Presbytery if they wish to remain on the Presbytery roll.
Length of Appointments: Are one year in length, and may be renewed each year. (Manuel 058e, 389 d xi) All appointments that go beyond a year must have Conference Settlement Committee approval.
New Ministry Personnel: Roland Legge, St. Paul's, Cochrane, Jen Dresser, Kapuskasing, Lyn Heeley, Massey Pastoral Charge, Erin Todd, Nickel District Pastoral Charge, Brenda Lumsden, St. Andrew's, Sturgeon Falls, Ted Harrison, Trinity, North Bay
Candidacy Pathway: Manitou has offered itself as a possible test Conference for the proposed Candidacy process. (Student does their internship after three consecutive years of study. Is placed in a congregation for two years of internship. Pastoral charge and the student could opt to continue in a call, or the student could accept a call to another pastoral charge.)
Educational Supervisors: A list of qualified supervisors will be circulated to E and S chairs.
Conference Sexual Abuse Consultants: Cathy Taylor, Greg Brewer, Wanda Wallace and Brenda Lumsden. Training around our policy took place in September. New brochures have been sent out.
Realignment: A letter will be sent to the Conference Executive encouraging Presbyteries to begin realignment conversations among pastoral charges.
Reimbursement of Travel Expenses: Pastoral charges are not required to "top up" their paid accountable ministry personnel's travel expenses when doing Presbytery and Conference work. Pastoral charges are obligated to reimburse for work on the pastoral charge only, but they may choose to "top up" for Presbytery and Conference work.
New Ministry and Personnel Committee handbook is being developed. Should be out in spring.
Transfer and Settlement: New proposal is being tested by remit. Candidates can choose to accept a call or go through the T and S process.
Affirm: The Conference executive will be asked to invite a rep from Affirm to attend our NPG event in June, and offer a time of education about their goals and work..
